Welcome Caleb Mason!
Welcome to the newest member of the Buckner Household -- little Caleb Mason, born Sunday, December 15 at 7:06AM! Boy, was it a wonderous birth, too! Autumn started having regular contractions on Saturday afternoon, and they got stronger as evening progressed. We went into the hospital late late Saturday night and stayed for an hour, but they didn't think Autumn was progressing fast enough and sent her back home to sleep through the night.
Caleb didn't care what those doctors and nurses thought, he was on his way! About 1:30AM Sunday morning Autumn's contractions got strong enough to where she was shaking her way through them! We headed back over to the hospital, where she was promptly admitted. When she was pretty far along and the contractions were very strong, she requested an epidural to help with the pain. Unfortunately the doctor had been pulled away to an emergency C-section elsewhere, so she had to wait and wait and wait. When they finally got around to her, it was almost time to push!
Autumn had to push through 5 contractions and gave birth to Caleb in 10 minutes! The receiving doctor was nearly not ready! I was able to cut the cord and tend to Autumn. Caleb was passed to other nurses, who weighed and measured him, and gave him all the perfunctory shots and such. He weighed a whopping 10lbs 2oz (See the scale in the picture!) and measured 22 inches long! Because the delivery was so short, Caleb didn't have the usual 'alien-baby' look; he was more of the rounded-baby look.
A couple hours after delivery we were moved to a 'post-recovery' room. (This is a very strange thing to call the room. We're still recovering; how can it be post-recovery?) Caleb learned all about the joys of eating and sleeping. Autumn learned about the joy of having a new son. I learned that as well... plus the joys of diaper changing. Weeee...
Note: Hospitals are very kind and helpful to the mothers and babies they serve. Fathers, on the other hand, are relegated to a foam couch. They rarely consult the father for anything, and if a father has a headache and goes in search of Tylenol, Advil, or Asprin -- well, just forget it! A kind nurse had some extra-strength Tylenol in her purse, and another managed to get me on the cafeteria food-service list so I had something to eat.
So now we're back home. Oh, home sweet home! Chloe (our dalmation) seems to accept this new family member with no problems. We've managed some short naps to try to get our strength back up. I'm sure we'll value sleep more than gold over the next few weeks. (months? years?)
That's it for this installment! We've got a lot to learn, and we are both looking forward to getting to know and love this little bundle of joy we've been blessed with. -JB
